A new patient exam with Dr. Smyth includes a comprehensive oral health assessment and an interactive discussion about your concerns, goals, and expectations. In your clinical exam, Dr. Smyth will inspect every tooth in your mouth, looking for decay, damage, or faulty dental work. We also screen for oral cancer and periodontal disease, then check your occlusion (bite). Digital X-rays and photos help Dr. Smyth accurately diagnose your dental needs. She'll show you her findings, then work with you to develop a treatment plan that suits your lifestyle and optimizes your oral health. Your comprehensive exam will include:
- Review of your medical and dental history
- Oral cancer screening
- Charting of your existing dental restorations
- Charting of any new necessary treatment
- Periodontal charting
- TMJ/Occlusion analysis
- Digital X-rays
- Digital photos
The American Dental Association recommends exams twice yearly for all patients, beginning at age one. Even those with great oral hygiene should visit the dentist regularly. Why? Because Dr. Smyth can detect small problems not visible to the naked eye and correct them before they require more advanced dental work. At your hygiene appointment, Dr.Smyth and her team will remove built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth and below the gum-line. This helps prevent gum disease, eliminates a major source of bad breath, and reduces staining.
